Project Overview

The Forest Corridor Development Project represents one of our most ambitious conservation initiatives, directly addressing habitat fragmentation—one of the greatest threats to Sinharaja’s biodiversity. Our plantation sits at a critical juncture between the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve and isolated forest patches, creating both a challenge and an extraordinary opportunity.

Through strategic reforestation and land management, we’re creating continuous forest corridors that enable safe movement for elephants, leopards, endemic birds, and countless other species. These green highways are essential for genetic diversity, food security, and the long-term survival of Sinharaja’s unique wildlife.

This project combines ecological science with community engagement, ensuring that conservation benefits both wildlife and the local people who share this landscape.

The Challenge

Decades of agricultural expansion, logging, and development have fragmented Sri Lanka’s once-continuous lowland rainforest into isolated patches. This fragmentation creates several critical problems:

  • Genetic Isolation: Small, isolated populations suffer from inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity
  • Limited Resources: Animals cannot access seasonal food sources or water in different forest patches
  • Human-Wildlife Conflict: Animals crossing open areas often encounter farms and villages
  • Reduced Resilience: Fragmented populations are more vulnerable to disease and climate change

Our plantation boundary presents a 15-kilometer gap between Sinharaja and the next significant forest patch. Wildlife attempting to cross this open landscape face roads, agricultural areas, and human settlements—often with fatal consequences.

Project Goals

Create Continuous Forest Corridors

Establish 12 kilometers of forested corridors connecting Sinharaja to isolated forest patches, with minimum corridor width of 50 meters.

Plant Native Tree Species

Reforest corridor areas with 500+ endemic and native tree species that provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Monitor Wildlife Movement

Install camera traps and conduct systematic surveys to document species using corridors and measure project success.

Reduce Human-Wildlife Conflict

Provide safe passage alternatives that keep wildlife away from farms and villages, protecting both animals and livelihoods.

Engage Local Communities

Involve local communities in corridor maintenance, creating sustainable income while building conservation stewardship.

Field Identification: Look for the distinctive slow, flapping flight pattern at canopy level or along forest edges. Males are unmistakable with their brilliant golden-yellow hindwings contrasting with jet-black forewings. The body is bright red with a black head.

Implementation Approach

Phase 1: Planning & Assessment (Completed 2023)

  • Wildlife movement pattern analysis using camera traps
  • Vegetation and soil surveys
  • Community consultation and land negotiations
  • Corridor route design and optimization

 

Phase 2: Initial Reforestation (2023-2024)

  • Native tree nursery establishment
  • First 8 kilometers of corridor planting
  • Installation of monitoring infrastructure
  • Community training and employment programs

 

Phase 3: Expansion & Monitoring (2025-2026)

  • Complete remaining 4 kilometers
  • Intensive wildlife monitoring
  • Corridor management and maintenance
  • Scientific research partnerships
